New York Fashion Week:

Hakan Akkaya:

New York Fashion week is one of the most important weeks in the fashion world as designers from all over the globe bring together their latest designs for the fall and winter 2019 season. This year the runways were filled with dark and muted colors with warm vibes. It seemed like every show I observed from this year was full of very boring and bleak patterns, so when I stumbled upon the Hakan Akkaya show I was blown away. Hakan Akkaya provided a variety of unique designs and bold patterns which made them really stand out to me. What made them stand out the most in my eyes however was the metallic and glittery patterns the designer has chosen to use. I admire this because the fall and winter fashion week shows are usually not as interesting as the fall and summer ones as they lack color and playfulness. Metallics and glitter fabrics are a perfect way to keep the winter vibe fun and fresh and Hakan Akkaya executed this brilliantly. Fashion Week online described this collection as Glam Rock, and I think thats the perfect term to describe what we saw on the runway this year. Here are just a few of my favorite looks from this show:

Trends I had noticed in this show were exaggerated shoulder styles, similar to those that were popular in the 80’s. As I said before, metallics, specifically in this show were used quite a lot. Both metallics and shoulder pads also made quite the appearance on the Grammy’s red carpet last week so these are two trends I will definitely be keeping my eye on. I also couldn’t help to feel like most of these looks were very David Bowie inspired. Especially the garment with the giant lightning bolt across it (shown below), exactly like the bolt bowie would wear on his face.

Tadashi Shoji

The second show I found myself interested in was Tadashi Shoji. Similar to Hakan Akkaya, Tadashi Shoji made sure to let his prints stand out amongst the usually muted tones of fall and winter fashion. The two words I would use to describe this show is elegance and opulence. A lot of sparkles were used in this show, which is of course, my favorite things about any show. But other than that, Tadashi Shoji made sure that each garment was bold in color, unique in pattern and kept me locked in the entire show. Down below are some of my favorites from the runway:

That being said, based on both these shows alone the trends I definitely will be keeping an eye on this season are metallics and glitter. Compared to spring and summer shows, it’s hard to make fall and winter shows as fun and exciting. Both these designers did so by adding unique prints and giving their garments life by dazzling them up with sequins. In my next blog post however I will be covering NYFW FW19′ as a whole and pointing out the 5 main trends I picked up from every show I observed.

Blog #2:

Last night was the 61st annual Grammy awards, an award show that celebrates music, art and red carpet fashion. This year was full of glitz and glam and sparkle. The red carpet was swarming in multiple different trends. Lets start with my favorite. Millennial pink:

Here we see an image of Kylie Jenner sporting a complex millennial pink pant suit. Below are photos of Anna Kendrick and Katy Perry, both wearing similar feathery pink garments. Millennial pink is a huge trend this year and all three outfits are paired with metallic elements which is also a huge reflection on the current millennium as metallic symbolizes the new age. I think all three of these outfits are a great reflection on what 2019 really is about and really puts an emphasis on the biggest trends for the end of the decade.

Speaking of metallic accents, here we see Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga both wearing silver dresses. It was interesting to see Gaga dressed in something considered mild for her. Both of these dresses are extremely similar and I absolutely love this trend. Both are very early 00’s chic and I think the silver metallic trend is due for a comeback. Both outfits are also paired with diamond choker style necklaces which in my opinion was a very classy finish that pulled these outfits together.

Next we see Janelle Monae and Jennifer Lopez wearing bold statement head apparel. I personally wasn’t a fan of Janelle’s Monae’s outfit as the extremely eccentric shoulder structure of her dress was already enough, the hat seemed like an unnecessary touch. JLo’s gown however I am absolutely in love with as it displayed elegant white silk with the perfect amount of glitz and glam. The hat with this gown is rather questionable as it covers her entire face, but assumably, that was the point of this garment. I personally am not a fan of the statement hats, but its safe to say that huge head pieces are a trend to keep your eye on this season.

Final trend that I have noticed on the Grammy’s red carpet was pant suits. Pant suits are not only a bold fashion statement but can reflect on current political movements. There were so many pant suits worn by women but here are just a few. Miley Cyrus wearing a black pant suit, all though simple, made a bold statement. Meghan Trainor showing a tasteful amount of skin in this white pantsuit, paired with a sequined belt, adding a classy amount of flair. Finally, Tracee Ellis Ross wearing a neon green pantsuit with a snake shaped belt as a statement piece. I personally would never wear a pant suit but I think in this current political climate, pant suits really help ensure the vision of a strong woman. Pant suits aren’t just for women in office but are a way to express that a woman can still look beautiful without being soft and feminine.

I personally think the trends we saw at the Grammy’s this year can really reflect on the current times between the use of millennial pink along with bold masculine statement pieces like oversized hats and jump suits that show the elegance of women without having to fit the general feminine stereotype. My favorite trends of the night were definitely the use of metallics and I will be sure to add more millennial pink to my closet this season.
